Susan became the first Special Agent and Executive Director of School Safety after the Columbine tragedy with the Colorado Department of Public Safety and Attorney General’s Office. Miss Payne founded the nonprofit and what is the gold standard and nationally recognized "Safe2Tell" anonymous reporting and information sharing system which became a government program. Susan shares a unique perspective on the history of responding to school shootings, the studies, lessons learned and opportunities to focus on prevention, protection and early intervention. As school leaders face a "Standard of Care", it is critical that informed decisions are made with a focus on best practice and research. Susan charts a roadmap for school safety improvement based on lessons learned, best practices in the field and what is currently working to create safer schools, safer students and a safer learning environment.
