Anna Fondario is the Regional Prevention Coordinator for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships. She works to support and enhance collaborative efforts between federal, state, and local governments and communities to educate, build partnerships, and develop strategies that prevent targeted violence and terrorism.
Anna was formerly the Director for the Office of Health Promotion and Prevention at the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, where she served for 19 years. She led strategic efforts to prevent violence and injury, chronic disease, and substance misuse through a social determinants of health lens and has extensive experience collaborating with government agencies, community-based organizations, health care providers, law enforcement and legislators to plan, prioritize and implement evidence-based public health policies and programs. She served as the principal investigator for many federal grants and was responsible for leading the daily operations of a large office, developing staff, and managing a multi-million-dollar budget. As a trained epidemiologist, she coordinated the surveillance, epidemiology, informatics, evaluation and data dissemination for all violence and injury related topics. She managed and analyzed violent death data using national databases and was instrumental in expanding Utah’s understanding of opioid overdose deaths, identifying risk and protective factors for substance misuse prevention, and establishing and implementing a statewide strategy to reduce opioid overdoses. Throughout her public health career, she has worked on multiple public health issues including domestic and sexual violence, suicide, opioids, falls, traumatic brain injuries, child maltreatment, substance misuse, motor vehicle crashes, obesity, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and COVID to improve health outcomes and create safe and healthy communities where everyone can thrive.
She graduated with a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Social Behavioral Sciences from Boston University where she was also a Family Violence Fellow. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Secondary Education from the University of South Carolina
