Chief J. Maurice Shults of the Newport Police Department graduated from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy in 1985. He graduated from Southeast Command and Leadership Academy in 2010. Chief Shults is a former student and adjunct professor for Walter State Community College. He serves as the Chairman for the Board of Directors for the Cocke County 911 District and is a member and elder of the Big Pigeon Primitive Baptist Church.
