School safety is often discussed in terms of preparing for and responding to crises, but some of the most important safety work happens long before a crisis occurs. Student wellbeing exists on a continuum, and opportunities for prevention begin well before a student reaches the point of significant concern. This session will explore the connection between student wellbeing, mental health, and school safety through an upstream prevention lens. Participants will examine how risk and protective factors and other indicators can help schools recognize when students may need support. The session will also explore the role school resource officers and other members of the school community play in noticing concerns, building connections, sharing information, and connecting students to appropriate resources. Participants will leave with practical strategies for strengthening protective factors, supporting early intervention, and building collaborative systems that promote student wellbeing and safer schools.
