Alan Walters currently serves as Chief Operations Officer for the Georgetown County School District (GCSD), which serves approximately 8,000 students in coastal South Carolina. He joined GCSD in 2014 as Director of Safety and Risk Management. Walters also served as a member of the South Carolina State Board of Education, which he chaired in 2022. Walters has served on several state education task forces including teacher recruiting and retention, school safety, and discipline. He was a member of the ASIS committee responsible for developing the School Security Standard .
Walters’ recognitions include being named Campus Safety Magazine’s National K-12 Director of the Year and was also the South Carolina Public Risk Managers Association (SCPRIMA) State Risk Professional of the Year in 2017. He was awarded the State District Level Administrator of the Year by the SC Association of School Administrators (SCASA) in 2021.
Prior to joining GCSD he served for 12 years as a Summary Court Judge. Walters also spent 17 years as a highly decorated law enforcement officer whose awards include being named South Carolina Deputy Sheriff of the Year and South Carolina Law Enforcement Office of the Year. During his service he held positions including Investigator, School Resource Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, SWAT Operator, Crisis Negotiator and Training Instructor, which included time in supervisory and command ranks.
He earned a B.S. degree in Education from Southern Illinois University and a Master of Criminal Justice degree from the University of South Carolina. He has been a presenter at local, state, national and international trainings. Alan lives in Pawleys Island, SC with his wife with whom he has two grown sons.
