Growing Up Online: Why Student Risk Has Changed
Description

Trusted adults responsible for student safety must recognize that today’s youth are developing in an environment of constant digital connection. Unlike previous generations, conflict, peer dynamics, and emotional stressors now unfold continuously—often publicly, anonymously, and without relief. This shift has fundamentally altered how risk develops, escalates, and presents in school settings.

Academic pressure, competitive athletics, online harassment through social media and gaming platforms, and increasing rates of youth anxiety and depression contribute to elevated stress and emotional dysregulation. These factors frequently intersect with warning behaviors relevant to threat assessment, including fixation, leakage, impulsivity, and social isolation.

Effective prevention now requires early identification, coordinated information-sharing, and a clear understanding of how digital environments amplify risk. Supporting student safety means equipping schools, families, and law enforcement with the awareness and tools necessary to recognize emerging threats and intervene before harm occurs.
