Navigating Drug Prevention and School Safety: Legal Frameworks and Effective Interventions*
Description

This session will provide an in-depth exploration of Utah’s policy landscape surrounding school-based drug prevention and intervention strategies. We will examine the intersection of legal frameworks, law enforcement, and school personnel intervention methods in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. The session will highlight model school policies and interventions as well as promote statewide resources for students struggling with substance abuse.  Guided by a panel of experts, participants will leave with a better understanding of Utah’s laws and multiple prevention and intervention tools aimed at creating effective responses to drug-related incidents in educational settings.

Objectives:

  1. Understand Current Legal Frameworks: Examine the laws related to search and seizure in schools, including student rights and the responsibilities of school officials and law enforcement.
  2. Explore Law Enforcement’s Role in School Safety: Discuss the role of local law enforcement and school resource officers (SROs) in maintaining a safe school environment, including best practices for collaboration between schools and law enforcement agencies.
  3. Review State Board Policies on Drug Prevention: Analyze state-level policies and resources that support drug prevention and intervention in schools, including guidance from Utah’s State Board of Education.
  4. Highlight Model School Policies and Interventions: Share best practices and model school policies that focus on drug prevention and early intervention.
  5. Promote Statewide Early Intervention Resources: Highlight statewide resources and programs aimed at early identification and intervention for students struggling with substance abuse, and how schools can effectively leverage these resources for improved student outcomes.

This session will be invaluable for school administrators, policymakers, law enforcement, and educators seeking to understand the current landscape and best practices for addressing drug-related issues in schools.
