Averting Targeted School Violence: The Importance of Reporting and Responsiveness
Description

The U.S. Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) continues to lead the field of behavioral threat assessment by conducting research, training, and consultation on threat assessment and the prevention of targeted violence. This presentation highlights NTAC’s research examining targeted school violence, specifically highlighting findings from NTAC’s report titled Averting Targeted School Violence: A U.S. Secret Service Analysis of Plots Against Schools and the latest NTAC publication titled Improving School Safety Through Bystander Reporting: A Toolkit for Strengthening K-12 Reporting Programs. This new resource, published in partnership with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA,) offers simple strategies and guidance to implement or enhance school safety reporting programs and foster a school environment in which students are more willing and able to report safety concerns. The toolkit provides schools with actionable, practical, and cost-efficient steps toward preventing acts of violence among our most important populations.
